How it works

Filament = grams ÷ 1000 × spool price × (1 + waste %). Electricity = kW × hours × rate. Wear = hours × (printer price ÷ expected lifetime hours).

Units are whatever you type: use one currency consistently for spool price, electricity and wear.

Assumptions

  • Wattage is an average; heat-up draws more
  • Fold nozzles, build plates and other consumables into the wear rate
  • Post-processing and labor not included

How much does a typical PLA print cost?

A 45 g, 3.5-hour print on a $20 spool costs roughly $1.00 in filament, $0.06 in electricity and $0.35 in wear — about $1.40 total.

What markup do people use when selling prints?

Hobby sellers commonly price at 3–5× material cost (200–400% markup), then add design and finishing time at an hourly rate.
